The Da Vinci Programme

St Birinus has an active programme for more able and motivated advanced learners, known as ‘The Da Vinci Programme’. Students invited to join have shown greater than average motivation and ability either in academic, creative or practical subjects. They may have been identified by their classroom teachers, heads of department, through test scores or through showing consistently excellent levels of achievement and effort.

To meet the needs of these learners, subject teachers work collaboratively with your child to deliver an enriched curriculum to develop their abilities and to encourage them to broaden and deepen their understanding of topics. This may mean that they will be offered opportunities to complete extension tasks in some subjects that will challenge and develop their thinking.

In addition to classroom learning activities, your child will be able to take part in a range of extra-curricular opportunities. Previously this has included:
‘Big Bang’ event at Rutherford Appleton Laboratory (year 7)
    Spelling Bee Competition (years 7 & 8)
Physics Challenge Day at Oxford University (year 8)
Carnegie book competition shadowing project (years 8 & 9)
    Mock trial competition (years 8 & 9)
    Oxford Pathways (year 10)
    Maths Challenge (all years)

In addition to these one-off opportunities, there are also regular events open to pupils in a range of academic, sporting and creative disciplines such as: choir, drama club, sports teams and languages breakfast club.

We hope your son will find his participation in the opportunities for advanced learners full of rich experiences that will inspire his love of learning—both in and outside of the classroom, and throughout life.
