Modern Languages

If you talk to a man in a language he understands, that goes to his head. If you talk to him in his own language, that goes to his heart.

Here at St.Birinus, we make use of state of the art data projectors in every language classroom and trips abroad to increase motivation and understanding of foreign cultures. We encourage our students to use their own devices to research and use websites and Apps to improve their accents and give helpful revision support. We have also established links with local primary schools and run joint training sessions to ensure that previously learned Modern Foreign Language experiences are built upon at St Birinus School.

The Modern Foreign Languages Faculty has skilled language teachers, who are committed to the maximum use of target language to deliver engaging and relevant lessons. French and Spanish are the main foreign languages taught at the school and all students study a language from years 7 to 9. From September 2014 boys will continue their Modern Foreign Language experience by studying French in the first year. Most students will be able to take a second language (Spanish) in Year 8 and continue to either consolidate their first language or develop both languages.

A large number of our boys take a Modern Foreign Language at GCSE, with many pupils opting to study both French and Spanish. In addition, at present we are able to offer some German twilight sessions to GCSE.

The MFL department runs a series of lunchtime clubs and language surgeries, which cover not only French and Spanish, but also German, Italian and Latin. We have a strong tradition of working with Gifted and Talented students and we are currently exploring opportunities to further experiences in local businesses. Our MFL ambassadors from the Sixth Form give great support and encouragement to the younger students and there are regular mentor meetings to help and guide those who might need reassurance or techniques to support their language learning.
