Inspired Sport

Sport is for everyone at St Birinus School.  It is about participation and excellence, personal development and competition.  There are three strands which run through our provision:  INSPIRED sport for all, the Advanced Sports Programme (ASP) and the Competitive Sports Programme. We offer a range of sports which is unrivalled in the state sector and whatever your sport, whatever your ability, there is something for you.

Advanced Sports Programme

Target group: 30 – 40 pupils who compete at District, County, Regional or National level.

The aim of the ASP is to support and develop those pupils who compete at the above levels outside of school sport through a termly programme of sessions with a focus on aspects of sports development. The students are also given the opportunity to attend events and visit elite sport establishments. In addition they provide guidance for other performers who aspire to compete at an advanced level.

Competitive Sports Programme

Target group: Pupils who represent the school in South Oxfordshire, Vale, County and National competitions.

The school enters pupils every year in the following:

South Oxfordshire Competitions in Athletics, Badminton, Basketball, Cricket, Cross Country, Football, Rugby, Softball and Swimming.

Vale of White Horse Competitions in Football.

County Competitions in Athletics, Badminton, Basketball, Cricket, Cross Country, Football, Rugby, Swimming, Tennis.

National Competitions in Football, Swimming, Weightlifting.

Sport Tours: The pupils who play in the school teams have also recently attended a Football Tour.

INSPIRED Sports Programme

Target group: Pupils who do not regularly compete in inter-school competitions.

B Teams: The school enters B teams in South Oxfordshire organised tournaments where possible.

Extra-curricular Programme: The provision of Extra-curricular activities is inclusive to all pupils.

Term 1 activities: Strength and Conditioning, Rugby, Football, Basketball (junior), Basketball (senior) and Squash.

Term 3 activities: Table Tennis, Dodgeball, Football, Rugby, Basketball, and Badminton.

Term 5 activities: Cricket, Athletics, Tennis, Table Tennis, Softball and Basketball (senior)

House competitions: The following programme runs every year for pupils in Year 7 - 10.

Term 1: House Cross-Country (6 per house per year - 96 pupils)

Term 2: House Football (14 per house per year – 224 pupils)

Term 3: House Basketball (10 per house, combined Year 7/8, Year 9/10 – 80 pupils)

Term 5: House Softball (All pupils in Year 7, 8 and 9 during PE lessons)

Term 6: House Tennis (8 per house per year – 128)

Term 6: House Athletics (Sports Day)

Sport Tours: The faculty also regularly organises Ski Trips and Water sport Trips.
