SBS hosts sculptor in residence

Posted on: 03/09/2019

In the last week of the summer term, St Birinus was lucky enough to host a sculptor in residence in the shape of Robert Jones, www.robertjonessculptures.com/about.

Robert is a nationally-acclaimed sculptor who lives on the Isle of Man. Inspired by the landscapes that surround him, his work mainly revolves around metal formed into different geometric shapes.

Year 9 students from both St Birinus and Didcot Girls' School worked with Robert in July to produce their own forms using an array of different found steel. As well as hosting their own exhibition at St Birinus School, the students experienced welding and used the blow torch to heat and shape metal, in addition to an array of hand tools.

We are extremely grateful to Robert for making the week a huge success and congratulations to students at both schools for producing a range of fantastic final sculptures accompanied by a host of drawings and other models. The students benefited greatly from this experience, learning skills that will help them throughout their education and in later life.
