Please enjoy Mrs Bowers' Thought for the Term on Community

Posted on: 26/03/2020

It is hard to believe that less than two weeks ago, I attended the conference of the Association of School and College Leaders (ASCL) at the ICC in Birmingham.

This event brought together a wide community of Headteachers, Deputies and other school leaders. It was also a particularly special event for the community of the Ridgeway Education trust as our Executive Headteacher, Rachael Warwick, is president of ASCL this year.  I was very proud to be there to hear her speech and also to see the wonderful performances of the RET choir and the dancers from DGS.

Since then though, I have not been able to physically get together with the communities which I belong to.  I couldn't visit my Grandma on her 100th birthday as I didn't want to put her at risk,  I am not able to be in school as St Birinus is closed and, as my friends and family are following the government advice and staying at home, I am not able to see them either.

But I am learning new things about community and how much it means to all of us in these strange times.  I have had a note through my door offering support from my neighbours, my friends and I formed a quiz team over the internet and I have spoken to my family on the phone.  As I write, over 500,000 people have signed up as volunteers to support the NHS.

What is most extraordinary to me also is the sense of the school community. Though the physical buildings are closed, teachers are still teaching, students are still learning and we are finding new ways to connect as a community even though we can't meet in person.  So do stay in touch.  Follow us on Twitter @StBirinusSchool.  Tweet us pictures and news.  Keep in touch with your teachers via Show My Homework.  Email us your work.  Tell us your stories.

We miss you.  Keep well.

Mrs Bowers

Deputy Headteacher
