Reading League Rugby Success!

Posted on: 25/10/2019

This week saw the final games of the Reading League played.  This has been St Birinus' first season in the competition and has been a huge success with all four of our teams qualifying for the finals to be played in the first week after half term.

Year 8
The Year 8 squad played their best rugby of the season so far to overcome Icknield Community College 20-0.  Icknield could not cope with the power of the SBS players, with Kai Wiblin, Joe Burke and Jake O'Connor in particular making regular breaks against the Icknield defence.  A hat-trick of tries for Kai Wiblin and one for Joe Burke were just reward for a commanding display.

Squad - Henry Mabey, Charles Mabey, Harry Herbert, Arif Siddique, Daan Cohen, Sam Oxley, Jake O'Connor, Jacob Marks, Finlay McMillan, Harry Wratton, Kai Wiblin, Ryan Sheppard, Joe Burke and Lucas Dixey

Year 7
St Birinus Year 7 Rugby squad remain undefeated after 12 games this season with 11 wins and 1 draw!  SBS secured a commanding win over Denefield 40-15, with tries for Samuel McDermott, Daniel Jones, Finn Williams, Jacob Lako and an outstanding team try scored in the corner by Will Carr.  The second game against local rivals Wallingford saw a tighter game with SBS winning 25-15.

Squad - Daniel Jones, Samuel McDermott, Jonas Whymark, Kieran Ellis, Finn Williams, Thomas McBain, Thomas Rice, Harry Pratley, Jacob Lako, Jake Curtis, Ben Mathews and William Carr

Year 9
Year 9 played their final games of the Reading League on Wednesday.  Their first opponents were Theale Green.  An early try by Jacob Townsend, who also converted, gave SBS the lead before he had to leave the field with a head injury.

Following a reorganisation, further tries were added by Kai Wiblin and a first school try for Reece Buckingham, both converted by Dylan Madge for a 21-0 win.

Their second game was against a well organised Denefield team who dominated the first half scoring two tries.  However, SBS were much better in the second half, the team and Harry Levell in particular were very unlucky not to score a try when driven into touch 1 metre from the line. Ultimately, it was not enough though as Denefield won 0-21.

Squad - Dylan Jones, Joseph Sykes, Henry Mabey, Daan Cohen, Jake Prior, Liam Madley, Freddie Stainthorp, Harry Levell, Sam Burchall, Jacob Townsend, Dylan Madge, Reece Buckingham, Kai Wiblin, Matthew Cooper, Alex Darling, Joe Burke

Year 10
Following a bye in the first round, Year 10 played against Burford in the second round in the County Cup.  This was always going to be challenging, having lost to the same team in the final of the County Vase last year.  A hugely entertaining game saw flowing rugby from both teams.  Birinus scored some outstanding tries but were unable to prevent their opponents from matching them, eventually losing the game by two tries, 52-38.

Squad - Kai Webster, Isaac Hall, Dolton Lincoln, Callum Henderson, George Rushton, Johnson Rabuka, Sam Burchall, Matthew Morton, Ioan Carter, Felix Cotton, Jake Prior
